Stillness Meditation
Brings Inner Peace
Stillness... how can we reach that inner state? Stillness meditation is always within us, yet it can seem painfully difficult to reach. Most often the reason is we believe it exists outside ourselves.
Some time after I began meditating I had an experience of stillness meditation that showed me two things:
- profound stillness is inside me
- I held onto inferiority
Some time into my meditation practice, I and my sister started a 6-7 AM swim program. Every part of me wanted to resist, as we walked to the recreation center on those cold, dark, winter mornings. Then I undressed again, showered and entered the chilly, chlorinated water... not my idea of fun. But in a moment of fitness consciousness, I had committed to being her swim buddy.
Only a few people swam lengths at that hour. One morning someone kept bumping me from behind and I was becoming annoyed. However, I persevered, trying to ignore the bumping.
As I continued swimming, suddenly the water became transformed into an ocean of pure, scintillating peace.
I was swimming through a thick sensation of stillness. The water was permeated with unearthly serenity. As I felt the lightness, the stillness and the peace surrounding me, rather than being amazed by this rapturous new experience, my mind said, "Joan must be here in the pool, too!"
Joan was an acquaintance from the stillness meditation centre that I attended. I perceived stillness in her each time we spoke. Now, you may have guessed, Joan wasn’t in the pool that morning. I don’t know if she even swam.
It was the great Presence, the Divine Presence within me that revealed itself so potently during my swim. And it was lack of self-love, an inferiority complex that caused me to place the experience outside myself.
Stillness meditation transforms the false understanding we have of ourselves. It dissolves our inner blocks and sometimes leads us to helpful resources.
Meditation requires self-effort. No-one can meditate for us. Making the effort to meditate attracts Divine Grace. Grace always follows our efforts. Grace can make effort seem effortless, or bring a beneficial outcome later on.
Stillness Meditation Brings Inner Peace
If stillness and peace seem elusive, it’s because they are buried beneath a million distractions. But have no worries, peace will find you, when you seek stillness through meditation.
India’s 5,000 year old scriptures say you are one with God and God is stillness. You will know stillness when you begin to know your Mind as consciousness... not what you and I learned growing up, is it?
This means that when you focus on a painting, your mind becomes the content. When you read a heart-wrenching story in the news, your mind becomes the content of that story. What does this phrase mean? When you empty your mind in stillness meditation, your mind becomes the content, it becomes the stillness.
This phrase is mysterious, rich and worth contemplation...
As we come to know the mind as consciousness, energy, we become quite choosey. In entertainment, we avoid senseless violence. We choose harmony over arguments. We choose to think thoughts that are joyful and compassionate... about ourselves, our family, strangers.
This constant effort attracts the Grace to steadily maintain inner peace. What actually happens is: we make space in our mind for stillness to be known.
My experience that morning was a gift of Grace. My higher Self, God in me, expanded my mind as higher consciousness and stillness.
