The science of mantra is believed to have originated in India. It has been used there for at least 10,000 years. ‘Mantra’ is a Sanskrit word meaning 'a tool for your mind'. Science and medicine have validated the extreme positive effects of mantra on the mind and body.

While it is recommended that a meditation mantra be in the original Sanskrit language, for relaxation purposes it’s perfectly fine to use English (or your own first language).

A little known fact about mantra is that it’s the subtle energy behind the word or phrase that influences how you feel inside. Relaxation is all about how you feel inside. That’s the goal in dissolving tension, pain and stress symptoms. As you use the relaxation mantra instructions here, step by step, your outcome can be deeply relaxing, transporting and refreshing.

Your relaxation mantra today will be your first name. Choose the name you were called before you encountered adult stresses like divorce or career challenges.

STEP 1: Write down your first name and research the meaning behind your name

STEP 2: Let the meaning sink into your heart. Then be sure you like your name form or choose another form of the name you resonate with

STEP 3: Begin with complete body relaxation as described on how-to-meditate-for-beginners page, then return here for STEPS 4 and 5

STEP 4: Combine your breathing with your name - for example, let’s say your name is Vicki. Breathing normally and comfortably, as you breathe in, say to yourself "Vicki...". As you breathe out, again say to yourself "Vicki...". Continue for 2-3 minutes or longer. (Variation: If you’re alone, try it out loud).

STEP 5: Finally, jot down a few words about what happened for you during this relaxation mantra exercise.
