Does Organizing Clutter Help You Lose Weight?

And does organizing clutter soothe your stress? You bet!
But let’s talk first about how clutter can make you stressed out or even sick, and how - often times - getting rid of clutter helps you clear out many health problems.

Getting rid of clutter often means asking yourself some honest questions like, "Where in my life do I have clutter?" Because, as you've probably noticed, it's difficult to relax or meditate even 1 minute if your environment is cluttered.

Organizing Clutter There are many books on the subject, but the one that I suggest is "Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?" by best-selling author and clutter expert Peter Walsh.

He not only shows you how organizing clutter in your home improves your health, he also provides many helpful worksheets and quizzes.
From there, your family, friend or work relationships can improve.

For example, he points out that if your kitchen clutter makes cooking uncomfortable, you're more likely to eat junk food or go to a restaurant nearly every day! How is this affecting your health? Well, restaurant food loses nutrients through overcooking and can put pounds on by being too fatty.

Did you know Ayurvedic doctors say there's a specific vibration that goes into the food that's being cooked? They say, when you eat food cooked with anger, you don't digest it well. Have you ever had indigestion (or worse) from restaurant food? The doctors say that food should be cooked with pleasant feelings, in a calm atmosphere.

How many restaurants can say their cooks are happy and calm? I trully believe home cooking is always better!

Is Organizing Clutter Worth It?

One key question to ask yourself when dealing with the stress of clutter is, "What is this costing me?"

Believe it or not, at a soul level, people know you by your habits rather than by your words. Your habits can deeply inspire the people around you or sadden them. And there’s more! By your habits and actions, people - including employers (yikes!) - get an intuitive sense whether you are organized, trustworthy and reliable.

You know how stress affects health, don’t you? You may have had a serious illnesses, even cancer. If you take a closer look at your personal and work environments, you can probably find the connection between clutter and your illness... Is your book collection or other hobby organized, or spread out in piles in your room or hallways?

When illness strikes or even when a relationship becomes stagnant, you can be sure there's a connection to the clutter around you. But there is one magical way of bringing about change, and this is organizing clutter and giving away objects you are not using any longer.

When you start getting rid of clutter, first look at places you collect it:

  • Does your closet prove the theory that women wear only 1/10 of their wardrobe?

  • Do you save old makeup, underwear, candy boxes, or something else?

  • Are your shoes all in good shape for wearing and comfortable for walking?

  • How easily can you find an item you haven’t used for six months?

  • Is your email inbox organized to find info easily?

Organizing Clutter Takes...

...willingness to change your unsupportive habits. Check this list for any current habits that stress you out:

  • Are you organized or chaotic?

  • Do you take care of your belongings or lose/abuse them?

  • Do you put things back after you’ve used something or desperately search for the needed item: car keys, glasses?

  • Do you arrive on time or are you often late? (being late is associated with mental clutter)

  • Are you willing to apologize when you've inconvenienced someone? (if not, there may be mental clutter)

  • Will you admit it when you've made an error? (if no, same as the point above)

  • Do you judge yourself harshly if you need help with something? (if yes, same as the point above)

The sages say, your mind can be seen in your environment. You can start organizing clutter with some simple changes, even one hour per week:

  1. Choose one area to de-clutter: a drawer, closet or even your email inbox

  2. As you look at each item, ask yourself "Does this bring me joy today?"

  3. If it used to but doesn’t now, you know what to do: recycle it or throw it away

And like with any accomplishment, getting rid of clutter needs to be celebrated in some way... it can be something small like a special cup of coffee in your favorite coffee shop!

As you can see, balancing stress is much easier in a clutter-free environment. As you de-clutter, you are clearing away the visible stress that’s there to show you that you need to address some underlying issue. Start organizing clutter - you may very well solve some long-standing personal or family problem.
