What’s The Price You Pay For Multi-tasking?

"Multi-tasking destroys our ability to focus. We concentrate on the act of concentration at the expense of whatever it is that we’re supposed to be concentrating on. In the short term, the fatigue, confusion and chaos experienced when you multi-task merely hinder your ability to analyze and focus, but in the long term, they may cause it to atrophy."

That quote is from an article by Walter Kirn, one of many articles today on how splitting your focus can negatively affect your health.

Multi-tasking

More and more scientific studies demonstrate that when you multi-task, your so-called stress hormones, like cortisol and adrenaline, significantly increase.

Research studies show that doing more than one thing at a time is a major cause of premature aging.

Multi-tasking and stress are here to stay. They’re a fact of daily living.

Or are they?

If you consider how you want to feel, you may decide there really IS something you can do about the daily stressors.

Perhaps you, and not outer circumstances, will direct your life’s movie, thank you very much. Since the world encountered "What the Bleep" and "The Secret", more people now know that changing anything is possible!

All it takes is adding some meditation practice tools and using a creative visualization strategy.

Creative Visualization does not require the ability to ‘visualize’, simply imagining it is enough. Creative Visualization (CV) as offered by Meditation Escape is a form of meditation. They are sometimes mentioned interchangeably on this website (but that may not be true on other websites).

Multitasking comes at such a high price. You serve everyone else's needs while forgetting, or not knowing how, to remain centered. Did you know that the main cause of death for working women is heart attacks? For decades this was exclusively men's domain.

Multi-tasking And Meditation

You’re in the perfect place at the perfect time to get your stress handled. Meditation is recognized by doctors to lower stress naturally. But there's so much more. This benefit is not the true purpose of meditation...

As you meditate, your mind and awareness move from your intellect to your heart. This shift connects you with your heart’s love, serenity and inner peace. It feels like your happiness and peace increase, when in fact, they were there all along.

Meditation lifts you out of the region or brain wave, where your stress exists. The brain waves during meditation are dramatically different from the brain waves during stress.

Guidelines For Healthy Multi-taskers

When you find yourself doing multiple activities at the same time, apply these simple guidelines:

  • Do one 2-5 min. meditation every day at work or where you spend your day; after meditation, return to your work/duties

  • Upon returning, inwardly express one grateful thought for this part of your life (for example, "I’m grateful for the income this work provides my family; or, I’m grateful that I can use my skills here; or, I’m grateful for the child/parent I have the good fortune to care for")

  • State your intention to bring meditation’s peace and calm into each, individual task

  • Prioritize as often as needed - some work/life roles require constant flexibility

  • Each time you begin or return to an incomplete task, pause first. Remember your inner peace and love that are always present. Do this by taking 5 seconds to breathe into your heart and feel or imagine your love or peace there

When you find yourself multi-tasking, use these guidelines with self-acceptance and be gentle with your progress.

What's The Naked Truth About Stress?

Peace and happiness are like a light, always 'ON'. They can often be covered up by a dark cloud. You guessed it - that cloud is negativity - that’s what stress really is. So as you invent new habits, stress, a side effect of multi-tasking, will noticeably decrease!
