What Are The Tools For Your
Meditation Home Study?

Your meditation home study is like glue. It holds your meditation practice together! Just as your hands and feet are both essential, home study and your enthusiasm for meditation promises you will make progress. It helps if you join a group from time to time to share experiences.

During my free guided relaxation teleclasses (courses by telephone) participants receive a technique for their meditation home study. You practice until the next teleclass. You can learn a lot this way.

Developing a meditation practice at home is a great step! A few minutes a day will give you a fresh mind. You really take charge of your destiny. Say there's a situation you are unhappy with. Let's use the example of wanting a new job. Before you meditate: You can jot down what it is you want... why you want it... how your life will be different... and in what way it's for the good of all. Then, you let it go. You do your meditation.

Often you will receive an insight. It may be... now is not the time. Or... phone this person. Or while you're shopping, you might pick up a certain newspaper and read a job ad that attracts you.

You may not have a result right away. If it's something truly important to you (not a whim) do it again. BE SURE to include the writing. Use the questions outlined above. You may add to them also.

In your meditation home study, if you can, meditate at the same time. If you have children, night may work well. Or at the office ... 3-5 minutes. Like any new habit, repetition gives you good results.

Also, try a longer meditation once a week. Perhaps 15-20 minutes on Sunday evenings will work for you. This will give you another kind of experience. The extra time lets you go deeper, like having a longer massage releases more toxins from your body. So remain in meditation a little longer whenever it's convenient for you.

The sages say the real purpose of meditation is to draw all our senses inside, then perceive the steady light of the inner flame. I assure you that with 3-5 minutes of daily practice, it can happen!

Delicious Elements To Experiment With In
Your Meditation Home Study

THE ATMOSPHERE:

In your meditation home study you'll want an atmosphere you can relax in. This may include some things that inspire you, depending on your preferences. There are no rules. You can simply sit and meditate anywhere. If you like beauty, create an area in one room that brings more juice to your heart. This can build anticipation for your next meditation.

You may choose to burn incense for a few moments before you meditate. Like beauty, a nice fragrance like sandalwood that gives a gentle scent helps calms your body and mind.

You may try placing a flower in a pretty vase by your meditation seat. You may want a picture of your favorite saint, or a statue that evokes love in its highest form. Music can cover any background sounds that may disturb. Meditation music is also a lovely focal point.

YOUR POSTURE:

In your meditation home study you want to forget about your knees! If you can sit well on the floor with a cushion under you and under your knees, that can be a good posture. If you have discomfort, I suggest sitting in a chair.

Do keep your spine lengthened. Tip your chin slightly down (like in this photo).

Sitting comfortably is the single most important thing you can do. Don't struggle if the floor doesn't work for you.

If possible avoid laying down. It's too easy to fall asleep. If a condition requires you lay down, you may want to see a Yoga Teacher for a few suggestions.

If you sit in a chair, here are a few tips. Keep your feet flat on the floor, hip distance apart. (You may need a firm cushion under your feet.) Put a cushion or baby blanket rolled up behind your back. This supports the spine to stay comfortably straight.

CHOOSE A FOCUS:

After posture, the most important part of your meditation home study is having something to focus on. The mind needs a focus. If you don't give it one, it assumes it’s time to think. Thoughts may still come up. Gently bring them back to the instructions or focus you are using.

If you're not using my audio meditations there are other good objects of focus. One is your own visualization script. (See Visualization Script) Or brainstorm several qualities, the kind you want more of. For example, meditate on patience, inner peace, strength, the phrase “I am love”, and so on… one at a time, of course.

For a focus in your meditation home study you can choose an object in nature like an open flower. Another classical focus for meditation isyour breath. An effective way is to combine your breath with a word or phrase. Repeat the phrase with each inhalation and with each exhalation. Continue this until you glide into meditation.

Most of all be kind to yourself… practice your meditation home study for as little as 3-5 minutes daily. I trust these suggestions will inspire you! Let me know how it goes.
